The situation

The pad is a hundred square feet of foam, and every inch of it moves.

Every raft-up in the cove runs the same math by two in the afternoon: five coolers, a dozen drinks, and not one still surface between the boat and the sandbar.

The mat itself.

The swim deck.

Measure the bottom, not the top.

One measurement decides most of it: a base about 2 to 3 inches across is what the fins can actually grip, floor and ceiling both. Glass is banned at most public lakes and beaches, so what actually shows up on the water is cans, slim cans, and lidded tumblers — every one of them tippy to begin with.

There's a floor as well as a ceiling — under about 2 inches it sits too loose, and the tall slim seltzer can rides right near that line, the tippiest common shape at the sandbar. The handled mug is the honest exception here too: the base would hold it fine, but the handle lands where a fin needs to grip.

Three parts, no moving parts.

The base spreads out.

Foam, a swim deck, a cooler lid — none of it is a fixed plane, so the wide flexible base lies across whatever's underneath instead of balancing on a single point the way a can's narrow bottom does.

The fins grip.

Flexible fins hold the can or tumbler by its bottom inch, snug enough that a bounce forty feet away or a bump from someone climbing aboard doesn't walk it loose.

It settles back.

A wake rolls through, a cannonball lands, someone shifts their weight hauling out — the base flexes with the surface under it and brings the drink back level instead of letting the motion carry through.

Does it actually work on wet, floppy foam?

That's the whole reason it's shaped this way. A narrow can base has no footing on foam that flexes with every knee and jump; the wide base spreads across it instead of sinking in, and the fins keep the drink from rattling loose when the mat moves. Push it off level and it settles back.

Wait — does it float?

No, and it's worth saying plainly: this is a drink holder, not a life vest. If the whole thing goes over the side, it sinks like anything else that isn't buoyant. A soaking is fine — rinse it off and it's back to normal — but keep it somewhere you can reach it, the same way you'd watch a cup.

Will my tumbler fit?

Measure the bottom, not the rim. A base of about 2 to 3 inches across fits — the 40 oz Stanley does. Handled mugs don't; the handle gets in the way of the fins.

What about a tall, skinny seltzer can?

Can I use it on the dock or the swim deck instead of the mat?

Yes — it works at least as well on hard, flat surfaces as it does on foam. The wide footprint and the grip keep a bumped drink from sliding on a slick, wet deck, which matters just as much there as it does on the pad.

A wake just rolled through — does that undo it?

Wake is the whole design brief. The base flexes with the mat and settles the drink back level when the surface rolls under it.
